What Your Job Will Be Like
We are seeking a Intern, R&D Undergrad – START HBCU Biosciences, CA Onsite
Sandia National Laboratories’ Bioscience Center in California seeks to hire interns to work on research projects at the interface of biology, chemistry and engineering. As a Bioscience Intern, you will join a multidisciplinary team and support exciting research projects using a wide range of molecular biology, microbiology, biochemistry and analytical skills to address important challenges in health, biodefense and bioenergy. You will be guided by a technical mentor and work closely with a team of researchers and interns on issues of national significance.
On any given day, you may be called on to:
- Work in Livermore CA
- Perform DNA sequencing and/or gene-editing
- Carry out molecular/immunoassays/separations (e.g. rt-PCR, ELISA, agarose gels)
- Perform histology/staining/imaging
- Culture cells and purify proteins
- Use technology/instrumentation (e.g. custom microfluidic systems, LC/MS, FPLC, flow-cytometry)
- Analyze experimental data and present results to the team
Throughout your internship, you will learn laboratory skills and join a high-performing research team. Students will be expected to demonstrate increasing levels of independence and responsibility and must show a commitment to operate in and contribute to a safe operating environment.
Salary Range
At Sandia, we value the important work done by our interns and its contribution to National Security. Because of this, our interns earn competitive pay rates. Our pay structure is based on earned credit hours, classification, and degree level. Your pay rate will be determined during the hire process and included in your offer package. Qualifications We Require
You bring the confidence and skills to be eligible for the job by meeting these minimum requirements:
- Currently attending and enrolled full time in the spring term immediately preceding the internship (or scheduled to graduate in the spring) in an accredited undergraduate program
- Pursuing a science, engineering, or math major
- Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0/4.0
- Ability to work up to 40 hours per week during the summer
- Ability to secure and maintatin a U.S. security clearance which requires U.S. citizenship
Note: If you have not earned a HS diploma or equivalent, please apply to a high school intern position.
Qualifications We Desire
- ¿¿¿¿¿¿Attendance at a HBCU during the Spring term prior to the internship
- Laboratory and/or computational research experience
- Experience in communicating scientific results through writing and presenting posters and/or presentations
- Completion of some college courses in biology, chemistry, computer science, or physics

Security Clearance
